Prairies
are ecological communities dominated by grasses and wildflowers.
By mid-summer the prairie is a mosaic of brilliantly colored wildflowers
in a sea of gently waving grasses. In addition to their natural
beauty, they provide important food and cover for a diversity of
wildlife. Out Native Prairie Seed Mixes are modeled after
native prairies and contain a high diversity of grases and wildflowers
normally associated with these communities. We have mixes specially
formulated for dry, mesic, or wet sites, including grass-only mixes.
Our Conservation Mixes are excellent choices for establishing
native cover on a budget. All perform best in areas receiving a
minimum of six hours of sun daily.

Establishing
a wildflower meadow using seed is rewarding and less expensive than
using transplants, but it can also be a challenge, depending upon
your site conditions. A native wildflower planting can take several
years to evolve into a low-maintenance landscape and prairie plants
usually require two to five years to bloom from seed (although a
few species will flower the first year).
A couple of
years isn't a long time to wait for a landscape that will be virtually
carefree and thrill you with its beauty the rest of your life. However,
if you want to establish your landscape more quickly or do not have
time to devote to site preparation and maintenance, you may want
to consider using transplants. Transplants, one established and
mulched, require little or no maintenance and usually bloom the
first or second year after planting.
